It is a carnivorous plant that comes from South Australia . It reaches up to 50 cm in diameter and takes on its intense red coloring once well exposed to the sun and therefore with the beautiful season.

The leaves of Cephalotus follicularis are of two types: simple ones reaching 1 to 2 cm in length, the others, serving as traps, are ascidians of 1.5 to 3 cm topped with an operculum.

Cephalotus follicularis maintenance

Temperature

Up to 40°C in summer and 0 to 15°C in winter. Tolerates light frosts.

Water

Use only rainwater, demineralized or reverse osmosis . Water that is too hard will cause the plant to die in a few weeks. Do not use bottled water, as it generally contains too much salt, which is harmful to the plant. In summer, place the plant in a large saucer with water. Autumn - winter: keep the substrate slightly moist by putting a little water in a saucer. Outside the growing season, be careful not to overwater!

Fertilizer

During the growing period, you can give liquid fertilizer (orchid fertilizer) diluted to a fifth.

Brightness

Avoid full sun, shaded but bright location.
In winter, if you can't leave it outside, place it in a cool room under artificial light .

Substrate

Carnivorous plant mix is the basic substrate for many species, you can make it yourself by mixing blond peat , perlite and vermiculite , (4V/1V/1V) or blond peat , and non-calcareous aquarium sand (2V/1V). Sphagnum moss is also suitable.
